Scientific Name: Bactrocera cucurbitae
The Melon Fly is reddish-brown with yellow markings on the thorax and a distinct yellow stripe down the center of the scutum. Wings are clear with a brownish band along the front edge and a prominent dark spot at the wing tip.
Punctures on young fruits, exuded sap or resinous droplets at oviposition sites, water-soaked brown spots, fruit distortion, premature fruit drop, and internal rot filled with maggot larvae.
Attacks all cucurbitaceous crops (watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, snake gourd, pumpkin). Causes 30% to 100% crop loss if unmanaged.
Female oviposits 100-500 eggs beneath fruit skin. Eggs hatch in 1-2 days into maggot larvae that feed internally for 4-7 days. Pupation occurs in the soil (5-10 cm deep) for 7-10 days before adult emergence.
